We're Still Here!

I'm so sorry! I hate it when I find a blog that looks interesting and then it isn't current, and now I'm the one doing it! We are still here, schooling at home.

I am using different curriculum than last year and, so far, it's going well. My 7th grader is using SOS for all of his subjects. I like how he can just login and it gives him all of his assignments for the day and there's little or no prepwork for me. However, we both are missing the interaction of doing things together and having discussions. My 5th grader is using various things. He's got SOS for math, he enjoys doing it on the computer and it's not overwhelming for him because it only shows one problem at a time. He gets really frustrated when you just hand him a paper full of math problems. We are using workbooks I got at Lakeshore for Science and Spelling and in history, we have been doing a state study and creating a notebook with one page for every state. I have now added Early American History by Beautiful Feet publishers. It's a literature based program using real books, no textbook. We just started this week, with the vikings. He's really enjoying it since he's into the vikings right now because of "How To Train Your Dragon". We read "The Light and the Glory for kids" together and that covered a lot of the founding of the nation from a Godly perspective. We really enjoyed reading about the founding fathers and how many of them made nation-chaning decisions based on what God had said to them. I'm just filling in the gaps and going over details with the history curriculum now.

Next year we will probably do different again - more of a mixture of things for my oldest. It's intimidating for me because he is in middle school. I want to make sure he is getting all of the basics he needs but, at the same time, still have the interaction and hands-on things for him. I'm looking at a literature based history that 'I can use with both of them as our main unit study. We'd like to do more co-op things next year as well. I'll keep you posted!
